Sanction Information

Providers must insure that Medicare reimbursement is not claimed in any manner for payments to physicians and other health care suppliers excluded from the Medicare program. In addition, Medicare cannot pay for institutional services ordered by a physician that has been sanctioned and/or excluded from the Medicare program.

For the past several years, Riverbend Government Benefits Administrator has issued a monthly bulletin series which identifies the exclusion and reinstatement activity for a particular month, as published by HCFA and the Office of Inspector General. Due to reduced contractor funding, we have curtailed the publication of this bulletin series.

Providers can obtain access to this information on the Internet through the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General web site. The Cumulative Sanction Report (CSR) is available in DBF format, a database file which allows the user to download the information to a personal computer and import it to a database such as dBase or Access. An instruction sheet, a record layout and a list of the sections of the Social Security Act under which exclusions are imposed are also available at this web site.

Monthly exclusion and reinstatement updates are posted in the same data format as the CSR. An instruction sheet is available for these files as well.
