OPO - HCL

An organ procurement organization (OPO) is an entity that performs or coordinates the retrieval, preservation, and transportation of organs and maintains a system of locating prospective recipients for available organs.

A histocompatibility laboratory (HCL) is a tissue typing lab and is a critical component of successful transplantations.  The laboratory does matching tests in preparation for procedures such as kidney transplants, bone marrow transplants, and blood platelet transfusions.  It is the only type of laboratory that must enroll with a fiscal intermediary.
